Overview

Nestled in the heart of Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang, Tan Tan‘g Street Cuisine offers a refreshing twist on casual dining with its open-air setup at 11 Daerah, Taman Bayu Mutiara. This modest yet inviting restaurant is a haven for those seeking a blend of traditional Malaysian flavors alongside hearty Western-style dishes, making it a versatile choice for both locals and visitors.

The alfresco dining environment, shaded and breezy thanks to multiple fans and natural sunlight filtered gently from behind the shop, sets a relaxed, friendly tone. Without an indoor seating option, patrons enjoy a cool, airy atmosphere that complements the simplicity of the menu and enhances the overall dining experience. It clearly caters to a crowd that values comfort without pretense—families, friends, and casual diners alike.

The culinary focus is broad yet focused, highlighted by their Soup of the Day and comforting mains like the Pork Ribs Small and Grilled Chicken Salad. Their Seafood Aglio Olio stands out with a vibrant, spicy kick balanced perfectly by fresh seafood, demonstrating the kitchen’s skill in marrying flavors. Meanwhile, dishes such as the Fish & Chip and Grill Chicken Cheese Baked Rice strike a perfect balance between Western comfort food and local taste preferences.

What resonates most with diners is the thoughtful execution behind each dish. Take the nasi lemak ayam berempah, for example, where the chicken arrives tender with a slightly crispy skin, accompanied by the standard yet essential sides — cucumber, egg, peanuts, and bilis. The sambal leans a bit sweeter and mild, ideal for those who appreciate flavor without overwhelming heat. Breakfast offerings are no afterthought either, accompanied by hot, freshly prepared sides like hash browns and sausages, inviting patrons to fuel up for the day within a cozy and unpretentious setting.

Service here has evolved positively, with quicker meal preparations and attentive staff whose warmth adds to the homely ambiance. While some youthful energy might show in moments of uncertainty, the overall experience is marked by friendliness and prompt response to customer needs. Customers appreciate the genuine care embedded in the service, enhancing the welcoming vibe of this locally beloved spot.

Overall, Tan Tan‘g Street Cuisine stands as a comfortable, affordable refuge for those craving quality and generous portions without the fuss. It shines as a gathering place for couples, friends, and families who appreciate a simple yet satisfying meal amidst a breezy atmosphere. Whether you're in search of a quick bite or a relaxed evening with familiar tastes, this little gem in Bukit Mertajam blends traditional charm and modest modernity skillfully into every plate.

The dining area has a comfortable inviting vibe to it. The colour theme is light and sitting is purely al fresco with a roof. There are no indoor sitting. The multiple fans made for a breezy atmosphere and the morning sun comes from behind the shop ensuring a shaded cool dining area for breakfast. They seemed to have corrected the earlier comments regarding their slow service and my food came quite fast. Their nasi lemak ayam berempah was pleasantly delicious. The chicken was tasty with a yummy slightly crispy skin while the meat was tender. The accompanying cucumber, egg, peanut and bilis was standard. The sambal veered a little to the sweet side and I enjoyed the marginal not overly spicy mix of the combination. As for the spaghetti, nicely oily spicy aglio olio with good mix of seafood ingredients. The breakfast combo plate also had a good mix of taste and ingredients. The best thing about it was that the hash brown, sausage and eggs came hot and freshly cooked / heated. The amount is filling and i enjoyed it quite well. Of course the prices are cafe level and expectedly so. Even then I think it's a nice place to have a simple traditional cafe twist breakfast with a comfortable environment.

A cute little spot, likely family-run, with very affordable food. They even allow you to dine in the famous nasi lemak tapao from their neighbor. The waitress seemed a bit unsure at first, but she was doing her best and had a really positive attitude. I’m sure she’ll get more comfortable with time. Overall, a pleasant experience with great service and a warm vibe.

Good environment to chill at dinner/night. Food are cheap & portion generous compared to other western food restaurant. Staffs are young but very friendly. Recommend if you are craving for decent western food but having thin wallet.
